New Law in New York State Expands Child Safety Seat Requirements
A new law went into effect in November 2009 requiring all children less than eight years of age to sit in a safety seat when riding in an automobile. The previous law had required the use of age- and size-appropriate seats until a child reached his or her seventh birthday. “While parents with children in elementary school may feel uncomfortable enforcing a safety seat rule, especially if their children put up a fuss, putting their children in booster seats can make a big difference in protecting them as passengers,” said a New York personal injury attorney.
“The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) consistently has found that about half the children between the ages of four and seven who are killed in car accidents are unrestrained. Among younger children who account for accident fatalities, about one-third are not restrained,” he added. The NHTSA estimates that proper seats can reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers and preschoolers. The New York State law specifies the type of restraint system required for children of different ages. All children under the age of four must sit in a federally-approved car seat when riding in a motor vehicle, including a school bus.
Infants should be placed in a rear-facing infant seat in the back seat until they reach about 27 inches and up to 20 pounds. Convertible seats can be used as either rear-facing infant seats or front-facing toddler seats. Seats that only face forward are designed for children who weigh at least 20 pounds. Some models can be converted into a booster seat for children who meet the weight guidelines. All children between the ages of four and six, and younger children who weigh over 40 pounds, should use a booster seat, harness or safety seat in combination with the car’s lap and shoulder belt, as long as they meet the height and weight recommendations of the manufacturer. These laws apply to all children being transported in are not required on school buses.
Even with this new and more stringent law, we may not be going far enough to protect our child passengers,” said New York based personal injury lawyer. “A parent or adult driver is not required to put a child in a booster seat once he or she reaches 4 feet 9 inches, 100 pounds, or eight years of age. Yet many eight-year-olds are not yet tall or heavy enough to sit in a standard seat with a safety belt that fits properly and offers enough protection in the event of an accident. Simple safety measures such as car and booster seats go a long way to help prevent injury and fatal injury to children in the event of an accident,” noted personal injury attorney. “Adults who drive with children in the car should take just a small amount of time to shop for and properly install the right equipment for their passengers.

Child Safety Guidelines for Local Churches $15.69 Child Safety Guidelines for Local Churches deals with the sensitive subject of child sexual abuse and what churches can do to protect children under their care while at the same time minimizing their own liability. Prevention and training are critical elements in developing a structure that ensures the safety of children while they are in God’s house. Sadly, many churches are unprepared to combat the possibility of the unthinkable happening to one of their precious little ones. By not taking reasonable precautions, they not only endanger the welfare of their youngsters, but are subject to charges of gross negligence and significant financial judgments against their congregations. The author outlines numerous steps that any congregation can take to protect both the children and churches they serve.ROGER MCNAMARA is a veteran pastor, missionary, and church planter with more than forty-six years of experience in local church ministry in Latin America and the United States. He has started and worked in half a dozen churches over the past four decades, and now serves as the Church Planting Training Specialist for Baptist Mid-Missions. In this capacity, he works with churches and church planters throughout the United States and Canada teaching, training, and mentoring church leaders. He also serves in a number of leadership positions within the Baptist Mid-Missions’ TEAM NORTH AMERICA as well as the registrar for the School of Church Planting. He has published two other books and several leadership training manuals. |

Little People: Guidelines for Common Sense Child Rearing $14.79 Dr. Christophersen takes the commonsense approach that children are little people but still people. How well children are prepared for life and how much they will enjoy life has a lot to do with how they are raised. "Catch ‘em Being Good" is one of Dr. Christophersen’s favorite pieces of advice. The entire book, Little People, is built around guidelines that will help you to encourage your child’s positive behavior. The book discusses the importance of touching to support a child’s emotional development and self-esteem. Dr. Christophersen’s advice also comforts parents by discussing what is normal and acceptable behavior. Dr. Christophersen emphasizes the importance of "time-in" with children. Mentalizing in Child Therapy: Guidelines for Clinical Practitioners $62.07 Psychoanalysis has always been a developing field. For the treatment of children whose development has come to a standstill, mentalization-based child therapy-previously known as developmental therapy-is the latest branch on this tree of knowledge. A combination of data from psychoanalysis, infant research, attachment research and neurobiology was of decisive significance in reaching this point. It is becoming clear that neurobiological processes can very well be understood on the basis of psychoanalytic frameworks. These new insights into people’s mental functioning also serve to foster collaboration, resulting in an integration of the more relationship-oriented treatments and the more competence-oriented treatments. This book will fill a growing need in mental health care for children and young people: integrated treatment, that is, using several different modes of treatment at the same time when the problems are complex. Treating complex problems in children with new psychoanalytic techniques is expected to add a new dimension to the practice of treatment, one that is interesting to cognitive behavioral therapists and psychoanalytically schooled psychotherapists alike. One step further, mental health care for children and adolescents may well draw benefits from the achievements of psychoanalysis, thus embedding psychoanalysis more firmly in the field of mental health care. To achieve this, not only will the various forms of psychotherapy need to be integrated, but the therapists as well. |
